The man’s futile attempts at conversation were soon abandoned as he observed the stony countenance of his companion. As they entered the gates, Renthile gave a stiff nod to the guard who grinned and saluted her. She narrowed her eyes and walked imperiously through the door as if she was trying to retain some dignity. The guard gave the man a good-natured wink and mouthed the words “I’m so sorry” to him as he passed. The man shrugged and returned the gesture.
